About me: About
My story

Throughout my career, leadership has not only been about guiding teams but also about advocating for what I believe in. As a proud Afro-Latina in tech, I've been at the forefront of championing diversity and inclusion in the industry. Recognizing the challenges and barriers many face, I've taken active roles in mentoring, creating inclusive policies, and fostering environments where everyone has an equal opportunity to thrive.

Outside the boardroom, my advocacy extends to my roots. Understanding the hardships faced by communities like the one in Quibdó, I’ve been actively involved in initiatives to provide resources, education, and opportunities to those in need. Through workshops, programs, and partnerships, I strive to bridge the gaps, ensuring that socio-economic challenges don't hinder dreams and aspirations.

Roots: A Glimpse into My Early Life in Colombia

Born in Colombia, the home of exquisite coffee, shimmering emeralds, and blossoming Valentines, I spent my formative years in Quibdó, nestled within the Chocó rainforest. The heart of this rainforest is rich in biodiversity but unfortunately struggles with poverty. It's a paradox - despite being one of the rainiest places globally, my hometown often grappled with basic amenities like clean drinking water.

Post high school, my mother, with immense sacrifices, enabled me to journey to England, enriching me with English language skills. Back in Colombia, I got a coveted spot at the University of Antioquia's Law School. However, challenges emerged, ranging from a looming global economic downturn to personal experiences like facing racism on my very first day at the university. These challenges catalyzed my decision, with my family's support, to embark on a new adventure to the USA.

The Tech Journey: From Developer to Executive

Hello there! I'm Sandra, an Afro-Latina who's carved a niche for herself in the tech realm. I began my tryst with technology as a Java/DevOps developer. While on the cusp of my MBA graduation, an invitation from JP Morgan Chase turned the tables for me. They saw potential in me during a recruiting event tailored for minority tech enthusiasts. I took the leap and embraced the role of a Scrum Master, immediately getting myself certified before I even began.

Over the years, I transitioned from leading agile teams in production support, emphasizing automation and best practices, to stepping into the shoes of a Product Manager. Here, I found myself orchestrating API development and leading the Operational Excellence team to ensure top-tier security and platform efficiency. By 2021, I had risen to the position of Vice President and Product Manager at JP Morgan Chase's API Marketplace, where my primary role revolves around tech modernization, enhancing API delivery, and mentoring budding talents.

My American Dream: College and Challenges in the USA

In 2008, I made a life-changing decision. Leaving law school in Colombia, I found myself in Philadelphia, juggling roles as a waitress and student at the Community College, pursuing an associate's degree in Paralegal studies. It wasn't long before my entrepreneurial spirit led me to establish a business catering to North Philadelphia's Latino community.

However, the allure of a stable corporate job saw me parting ways with my venture, focusing on completing my education.

Determined to pivot my career, I took night classes at Villanova University, earning a bachelor's in Information Systems, all while managing a demanding full-time job. My dedication caught the attention of Thomson Reuters, which recruited me as a Java DevOps developer just before my graduation. Through the ups and downs, including personal challenges like divorce and finding my footing in the tech space, I discovered the transformative power of Agile methodologies, recognizing the potential of streamlined Scrum teams in overcoming common developer hurdles.
